What To Expect from your session with me | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

What to expect during your newborn photography session.

Welcoming a new baby is… a lot.

Beautiful. Overwhelming. Sleep-deprived. Love-drunk. All of it.

Which is exactly why my approach to newborn photography is designed to feel like a deep breath in - slow, gentle, and fully centred around you and your little one.

Here’s a peek at what you can expect from your newborn session with me, from start to finish.

Once your session is booked in (usually scheduled for when bub is around 1–2 weeks old), I’ll send through a simple pre-session guide that covers everything you need to know, like what to wear, how to prepare, and what to bring (spoiler: not much).

You’ll have access to my thoughtfully curated client wardrobe for mamas, filled with soft, timeless pieces that photograph beautifully and feel effortless to wear - you’ve already got enough to think about, so lets take one thing off your plate!

Your session will take place at my beautiful natural light studio in Whittlesea, in Melbourne’s North-East. A calm, cosy space designed to feel like a soft landing. Think warm sunlight through sheer curtains, natural textures, a calm, open space for you to simply settle in and be.

Once you’ve arrived, there’s absolutely no rush. Feed bub, have a cup of tea, take a breath. We’ll move at a pace that suits your little one and your family.

During the session your baby leads the way. Whether they snooze soundly throughout, are wide awake with serious FOMO, or are somewhere in between, we’ll flow with it. Between my own studio and my previous jobs I’ve worked with hundreds of babies over the years, and I promise you that I’ve seen it all.

Nappy change or blowout? Feeding break? Bub just wants mum cuddles? Totally fine! We pause and go with it. There’s zero pressure for anything to go ‘perfectly’ because honestly, the magic usually lives in the in-between moments.

And what about the "What if my toddler doesn't behave?" panic. I hear this all the time, and I promise you it’s totally normal to worry, but it’s absolutely nothing to stress about. I’ve worked with so many families with young children, and here’s what I know to be true - toddlers are going to toddler! And that’s completely okay.

Your little one doesn’t need to sit still or smile perfectly. I’ll gently guide things in a way that feels playful and pressure-free. Think games, snuggles, and genuine connection rather than stiff poses or forced smiles. To be completely honest, I prefer to make a game out of it as the most beautiful images come from letting them be exactly who they are! We all know you can’t simply tell a toddler to sit and say cheese (unless you want that ‘just seen a ghost toddler grin’). No thanks, we want the real and emotive moments - “Do you think you can snuggle in and see if your sister’s cheeks are as soft as marshmallows?” - that’s the real magic.

I’ll gently guide you through simple, natural poses that focus on connection, not performance. You don’t need to know what to do, that’s my job.

And if they need a break? We take one. There’s time. There’s space. This session is designed with your whole family in mind. Big feelings, snack breaks…it’s all okay with me.

One of the things I hear most from parents after a session is, “That was so much more relaxing than I expected.”

And that’s exactly the goal! My biggest strive is for you to leave your session feeling completely relaxed and content. My studio space has been intentionally created to feel calm, warm and welcoming, with little comforts tucked in to make sure you feel taken care of too. Think of it as your little postpartum sanctuary for the morning.

Once we’ve wrapped up your session, within 1–2 weeks you’ll receive a private online selections gallery to view and choose your favourites. From there I’ll carefully hand-edit your images in my signature soft, emotive style. If you’ve selected an album or print products, I’ll get those beautiful keepsakes underway - ready to be held, gifted, and passed down. These aren’t just photos for your phone, they’re tangible reminders of this season, made to last. (And yes, I’ll usually share a few sneak peeks on Instagram during this time because I know the wait is torture!)

The newborn season is so fleeting. The way they curl into you. The teeny tiny toes. Their hilarious balding little old man hair styles. The sweet milky breath (I was wildly obsessed with my son’s milky breath!…anyone else, or was that just me?)

Whether you’re sleep-deprived or soaking it all in, I’m here to help you remember just how much love lived in these early days.

When you’ve blinked and your little one is suddenly a toddler raiding every cupboard and launching off the couch sumo-style, trust me, you’ll come back to these photos time and time again. My greatest hope when you look at them is that all the feelings, all the emotions, all the magic comes rushing back to you as well.
